A brief history of Information Architecture
Information architecture (IA) is structural design of shared environments both online and offline and concerns how people understand and relate to their surroundings. Online, IA refers to creating the structure of user interfaces (websites, apps, software) and affects how users connect with the content within them. Incorporating design, content and engineering disciplines, such as user research, wireframing, navigation definition and data modeling, IA is typically a shared task between all three teams. It came about in the 1970s, with the rise in popularity of web and mobile technologies.
“More devices are coming online every day, creating and accessing ever more information. IA is how we make sense of it.” Jorge Arango, Information Architect, Partner at Futuredraft
IA offline extends to raising awareness for and creating strategies to find solutions to social challenges, such as making cities greener. A grassroots-organized event, World IA Day is perfect for anyone and everyone interested in the future of Information Architecture looking to help strengthen the IA community.
