Re-using "attributes/elements" with persistant values on multiple tabs of a dynamic panel

Can I display the same "element" ie input field on multiple tabs of a dynamic panel? For example I want to have the user enter a value on tab 1 and when the system shows tab 2 based upon interaction I want to display the text box as it was on tab 1 already populated and editable. I see that I can make a copy but do not see how to display the already selected value on multiple tabs.

Just place it 'above' the dynamic panel instead of 'inside'. To place things above panels use the direction keys.

But what if you have dynamic panels within dynamic panels? Then that doesn't work because the element is always on top when it needs to be in the context of the panel only.

For example, I have a multi-process registration set-up broken down into tabs (using a dynamic panel) and on each panel I have dynamic panels to show/hide elements of the registration within that tab.

So is there a way to set a field value with what was entered into another field somewhere else in the prototype?
