can't add or delete an object from a group; ungrouping loses actions

Solved

The "group" concept seems to be really brittle. While I can edit objects that are within a group, I can't add anything to a group or delete anything that's within a group without ungrouping. Unfortunately, ungrouping destroys any actions that I have programmed that affect that group, so I really don't want to do that.

A prototyper is all about creating things incrementally and tweaking things around as you go. It's really counter to the prototyping mindset to be stopped like this when I want to make a small change to a group that I've already created. Please make it possible to add/delete objects to/from a group.

I have two news. One bad and one good. The bad one is now, as you see, working with groups is a nightmare. The good one is one of our engineers is already working on them since past week and he has nearly finished. So the next update will have this and many other problems with groups fixed.

Fixed in version 4.6.1

I am working with 5.1 on the Mac and once a group is created, i can not add any new items to that group. An example I am working on is a modal. Im grouping everything in the modal to make it easier to show/hide. Any time I need to make a change to whats on the modal, I need to ungroup and regroup everything and re-setup the on-click event to show the modal. When trying to drag the item into the group inside the outliner, it looks like it should be dropped under the group but then shows up either above or below the group, sometimes at the bottom of the outliner list. This of course is not ideal.

There's a trick. Copy the element you want to insert into a group, then select the group and 'paste'. Your element will be in the group.

Thanks for the tip. It turns out that it didn't work for me exactly as you described. But it did work if I selected one if the items currently in the group (rather than selecting the group itself) and then pasted.

Mmm, interesting, I'll check it out. Thanks!

After finding this post, I tried the above suggestion. Adding items to groups (and even dynamic panels) works only if you select an item within a group. This is good news. Haven't determined whether the function should be different but thankful for this post. Recreating events stinks! Can anything be done about this issue?

I had no luck trying to add an object to an existing group. Seems it was solved in version 4.6.1, but cannot make it work in version 5.5.0.

Do you have an update about it?

Edit: the problem appears only when a group is inside another group.

Group1

-- Group 2

-- Item 1

-- Item 2

-- Group 3

-- Item 3

-- Item 4

If I want to add a new object to group 2, I have to ungroup first group 1. Otherwise the object is never added in group 2.

If there is only one group level, you can certainly add an item by selecting first an object within the group, not the group itself.

Hi Alex,

the only way to do it in version 5.5.0 is ungroupind and then group with the extra element. We have improved it in the new version that we will launch in a few days.
